Marseille-Shakhtar: Match Review

Shakhtar's latest game in the Europa League started actively, with the first dangerous moments created at the beginning. First, Eginakldo made a shot from the left flank, but it was blocked by a defender. The French responded with a shot from Zhigo after a corner, but the ball went over the goal. Sikana had a good chance, shooting at the far corner, but Lopez dealt with the shot. However, at the 12th minute, the miners managed to score the first goal: Eginakldo, moving along the left flank, forced Kloss to foul and earned a penalty, which was successfully converted by Georgiy Sudakov. Marseille players tried to fight back and managed to do so at the 23rd minute, when Arit scored following a pass from Obameyang. At the end of the first half, the hosts looked more active but could not score more.

In the second half, Shakhtar players were the first to attack: Konoplya broke through to the penalty area and made a sharp-angle shot – defenders cleared the ball out of the goal line. Then, after a corner, Efim headed from among the defenders, but the ball miraculously didn't go into the goal. Marseille quickly responded with two dangerous moments: a powerful shot from Kloss with a deflection off Azarov went inches from the post, and Mumbanya directed a header straight into the center of the goal after a corner – Dmitry Reznik coped with the shot.

Closer to the middle of the second half, both teams slowed down and began to act more cautiously, waiting for their moments. At the 74th minute, the hosts took advantage of one of such moments: Obameyang made a pass to Sarr, who successfully hit the goal from close range, putting Marseille ahead. In response, Rakitskiy tried to hit the goal after a free kick, but Lopez parried the ball.

At the 81st minute, the opponents scored another goal: Kondogbia rolled the ball into the empty net after a free-kick. Shakhtar's coach, Marino Pusic, made five substitutions, bringing Nevertov, Pedrinho, Krisvik, Shved, and Traore onto the field, but there wasn't enough time or strength to change the course of the match and save the game. The result – a defeat with a score of 1:3. Shakhtar ends its performance in the European cups, losing to Marseille.

On February 26th, Monday, Shakhtar resumes the UPL season at their stadium. In the 18th round of the UPL under the guidance of Marino Pusic, the team will play away against Alexandria. The match is scheduled to start at 13:00.
